Slovenia is a beautiful country, renowned for its stunning natural landscapes. The northwestern region, around Triglav National Park and the areas of Bled and Bohinj, transforms into a magical winter wonderland, covered in snow and ice. This is the perfect opportunity to engage in adventurous activities amidst this breathtaking scenery. These activities vary in difficulty and thrill levels, but we at Gosoloslovenia have compiled a list of must-try winter adventures in Slovenia just for you!
Which activities are there?
There are a variety of activities ranging from calm and relatively relaxed to highly adventurous. The list we have put together includes ski jumping, skiing and snowboarding, winter hiking, ice climbing, and lastly sledging.
See the world best ski jumpers in Podkoren
Ski jumping is incredibly popular in Slovenia. This extreme sport is not for the faint-hearted or those who shy away from adrenaline. In ski jumping, you descend at high speed before soaring hundreds of meters through the air and landing safely on the ground. At the Planica Nordic Center, there are various ski jumping hills with different heights, catering to everyone from beginners to professionals. Did you know that the Planica Ski Center boasts the highest ski jump in the world, standing at 50 meters? Additionally, there are hills of 10, 15, 20, and 40 meters in height!
If you’re not an adventurous person ready to try ski jumping yourself, we at Gosoloslovenia recommend visiting between March 27 and 30, 2025, to watch the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup Finals. During these finals, the world’s best ski jumpers will gather in Kranjska Gora to compete for the world championship title.
Discover the slopes during skiing and snowboarding
If you’re not an advanced ski jumper but still love adrenaline and adventure, and you want to enjoy your winter sports experience without spending too much money, you can go snowboarding or skiing solo on one of the many slopes Slovenia has to offer. The northwestern part of Slovenia lies in the Alps, and many places are covered in snow during the winter months. Compared to Austria, Switzerland, and France, most ski resorts in Slovenia are relatively quiet, making it a great place to show off your skiing or snowboarding skills to other solo female travelers!
At Gosoloslovenia, we’ve also created a list of the best ski resorts in Slovenia.
Top 4 best ski Resorts in Slovenia
Kranjska Gora
Kranjska Gora has one of the largest ski resorts in Slovenia, with a total of 20 kilometers of slopes and 22 lifts. This makes it possible to spend several days skiing or snowboarding. The town of Kranjska Gora itself is also very charming to visit after your ski or snowboard adventure. It has several cozy restaurants, and a beautiful lake located near the slopes.
Cerkno
Cerkno has a total of 18 kilometers of slopes and 8 lifts. This village is smaller than Kranjska Gora, but it’s still a great and quiet place for skiing or snowboarding. Cerkno is about an hour’s drive from Ljubljana. It is known for having one of the most modern ski resorts in Slovenia and is also famous for its après-ski options.
Vogel
Vogel Ski Resort is the third-largest ski resort in Slovenia, with a total of 22 kilometers of slopes and 8 lifts. Among these lifts is the Vogel Cable Car, which offers a stunning view of Lake Bohinj. Vogel also features a freestyle park for skiers and snowboarders who love adrenaline.
Cerklje Kravec
The last resort on this list has the longest number of slopes. The Cerklje Kravec ski resort has 29 kilometers of slopes spread over 27 runs. It also has 11 lifts. What makes this location special is that night skiing is available on certain evenings. This resort is only 40 minutes’ drive from Ljubljana, and there are several hotels and lodges located directly on the slopes, making it easy to start skiing or snowboarding right away.
Enjoy the white nature during winter hiking
A slightly more relaxed activity that is still adventurous and perfect to do on your own for complete tranquility is winter hiking. There are stunning walking paths and hiking trails to explore during the winter season. In Triglav National Park, you’ll find a variety of hikes, and you can also walk along the Soca River. Around Kranjska Gora, there are beautiful trails to discover, while in Bohinj and Bled, you can opt for serene walks along the lakes. Make sure to wear sturdy, waterproof shoes with an excellent grip. Warm clothing is also essential for your comfort and safety. We recommend bringing trekking poles for extra stability, and if you plan to take on more advanced hikes, consider attaching spikes to your shoes for better traction.
Climb the most beautiful waterfall in Slovenia during Ice climbing
At Gosoloslovenia, we consider this one of the most adventurous activities to try during winter in Slovenia. Ice climbing is an exciting experience where you climb up a frozen waterfall or, in some cases, a frozen mountainside. There are several locations in Slovenia perfect for ice climbing. One of the most stunning spots is the Peričnik Waterfall, near Mojstrana. You can first enjoy a simple walk to this beautiful waterfall before attempting to climb it. Another excellent location for ice climbing is near the Soca River or the Martuljek Waterfall, close to Kranjska Gora.
Before attempting to climb a frozen waterfall, always check the stability of the ice. Temperature fluctuations can affect the ice’s condition, so ensure that you go during a period when temperatures have consistently stayed below freezing for several days. If you’re inexperienced, we strongly recommend hiring a guide. Climbing solo can be risky, and having a professional ensures a safer and more enjoyable experience.
This adventure is guaranteed to be one of the highlights of your solo journey through Slovenia.
Sledging
Sledding in Slovenia is an exciting winter activity that’s fun for everyone. There are several locations and sledding trails across the country, each varying in difficulty. Kranjska Gora offers evening sledding sessions on select slopes, adding a unique twist to your adventure. At the Vogel Ski Resort, there are also designated sledding areas. As you glide down the mountain, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the surroundings and the nearby Lake Bohinj.
For adrenaline-seekers, the Zoisova Koča track is a must-try. This sledding trail is famous for its length and thrilling descents.
